Introduction to Coaching – Off-Road

Take the first step towards becoming a qualified off-road cycling coach with the British Cycling Introduction to Coaching – Off-Road course, professionally delivered by Velo Coaching.
Off-road cycling is one of the UK's fastest-growing disciplines, and this qualification provides the essential knowledge, practical coaching skills and confidence to support riders in developing the fundamental techniques needed for safe and enjoyable off-road riding.
Whether you want to coach at your local club, support community cycling projects or begin your journey towards becoming a mountain bike coach, this course provides an excellent foundation.
What will I be qualified to do?
On successful completion, you will become a British Cycling Activity Coach – Off-Road.
As an Activity Coach, you'll be qualified to deliver coaching sessions that develop the core foundation skills for off-road cycling, including:
- Ready position and body position
- Body movement
- Weighting and unweighting the bike
- Cornering techniques
- Rider confidence and control
- Planning and delivering safe, engaging coaching sessions
Where can I coach?
The qualification allows you to coach in a range of suitable off-road environments, including:
- Forest trails
- Trail Centres
- Pump tracks
- Technical riding areas with rollable features
Who can I coach?
Following qualification, you can coach:
- Up to 8 riders on trails.
- Up to 20 riders in non-technical off-road environments.

Course Requirements
Minimum age
- 14 years (independent coaching from age 18)
Riding experience
- Experience of riding off-road.
Coaching experience
- None required, although previous coaching or instructing experience in any sport is beneficial.
Equipment
- Gravel bike, CX Bike or MTB suitable for off-road riding.
- Bike must be in good working order.
- Approved cycling helmet.
First Aid
Although not essential for attending the course, British Cycling recommends holding a First Aid qualification when coaching independently.
To be covered by British Cycling Coach Insurance, you'll need an Emergency First Aid qualification. If you intend to progress to Coaching in Context and advanced coaching qualifications, a 2-Day Outdoor First Aid certificate is recommended.
Progression
This qualification is the first step on the British Cycling Off-Road Coaching Pathway.
Following completion, you can progress into Coaching in Context for specialist disciplines, including:
- Mountain Bike Cross Country (XC)
- Mountain Bike Gravity
- Cyclocross
Course Fee
£270 per person
